How to Select the Right High Pressure Reactor

1. Define Your Application Requirements

Start by clearly defining what you need the reactor for – synthesis, catalysis, polymerisation, or hydrogenation. This will determine the material, pressure, and temperature requirements.

2. Material Selection

  • Stainless Steel (SS316): General‑purpose, cost‑effective, good corrosion resistance.
  • Hastelloy C276: Excellent resistance to acids and chlorides, suitable for aggressive chemicals.
  • Inconel 625: High‑temperature and high‑pressure applications, good oxidation resistance.
  • Titanium: Lightweight, excellent corrosion resistance, especially for seawater and chlorine.
  • Glass / Quartz: For visual observation and where metal contamination is a concern.

3. Pressure and Temperature Ratings

Choose a reactor that can handle your maximum operating pressure and temperature with a safety margin of at least 20%. Benchtop reactors typically go up to 350 bar and 500°C.

4. Volume Capacity

  • Benchtop scale: 100ml – 1L
  • Lab scale: 1L – 25L
  • Pilot scale: 50L – 500L

5. Stirring Mechanism

Magnetic stirring is suitable for low‑viscosity fluids. For high‑viscosity or heterogeneous reactions, choose mechanical stirring with overhead motors.

6. Automation and Control

Modern reactors offer touchscreen controls, remote monitoring, programmable sequences, and data logging. Consider your need for automation and integration with lab information systems.

7. Safety Features

Look for over‑pressure protection, burst discs, temperature interlocks, and fail‑safe mechanisms.
